Well, I made it through the NetTrek program--I learned some new things and had a good time doing it. I don't think I'll be a true blogger, because I don't want to say that much (at least, not publicly).
I'm glad I know how to help folks do some of the online stuff that's so popular now, and I think I have a pretty good picture of how the skills we've been practicing can work together. I see good possibilities for collaboration through shared google docs, etc., especially for working long-distance or from separate facilities.
I still don't know which way is up, but that's ok--this has been a good learning experience for me. Thanks, Brandy, for a great trip!

New Adventures in the Catalog!!!
Welcome to the new catalog. Hmmm, I started off well.... The first thing I did was something I shouldn't have done--I changed my user name and password, since that's what the catalog says to do. I soon found out that I couldn't get back in once I'd logged out. Then I noticed a couple messages posted to the Intranet--one of which turned out to be a caution not to change ID or password, since those functions are not yet working properly. I had to call Pat to rescue me by resetting everything. Anyway, I'm browsing along now.
There are many cool things about the new catalog, but I think one of my favorite is the ability to save titles of books & other materials to lists, and to add descriptive notes about them. I see things all the time that I think would be good to read/listen to/watch, and I forget them before I get a chance to make a note to myself--it happens constantly! It's nice to be able to save stuff while I'm looking for something else
So far, I am mostly pleased with the new format, and I think patrons will like it as well. Use seems to me to be fairly intuitive. I haven't been trained yet, but I'm still finding it easy to browse through the various options and get around in the catalog. I've tried a number of various searches, for authors, titles, subjects, and I have had pretty good success finding things with minimal information (which sometimes happens when patrons come looking for a particular book, for example).
I do wish, though, that there was a browse function similar to the one in Sirsi that would allow me to look at and browse through lists of subjects, authors, etc. I like that feature, because it lets a person easily look at a range of things in a given area, especially if you aren't sure exactly what the search phrase might be. Maybe that is in there somewhere, but I haven't found it yet.
I'm trying to use the new catalog for some of my work activities, so I can figure out if there are other things I think might be good. One option I'd like, if possible, would be to have, at the top of the search results page, boxes for changing the number of results, for choosing page number, and a next/previous button. Also, as I always wished with Sirsi, I'd like to be able to look at details for a book and then return to the prior screen without being bumped back up to the top of the page of search results. But, these are minor things--just something for my "wish list."

I can hardly believe I was actually able to re-size and embed this into my blog. I went to look at Vimeo, and found many quirky and interesting short videos posted there. I decided to try to post one. When I found the "embed" key, I tried pushing it, and that opened a window where I could re-size in the html code, then copy and paste into a blog post, and voila...! I'm learning new skills AND having fun!

I've subscribed to three new RSS feeds from:
1. Awful Library Books
2. librarian.net
3. Library Stuff
I can hardly wait to see what comes rolling into my Google Reader. I chose "Awful Library Books" since I first saw it a while back on Eric's blog, and it looked like a fun site. I thought the other two sites might have some interesting information to share.
I also have a subscription to Google News, just for keeping up with what's happening in the world. Now I just need time to read all these feeds!!

I'll Never Get Anywhere This Way
Well, I started to explore the Web 2.0 Award Winners, and I quickly found myself in StumbleUpon. I realized that I could probably wander around in there for hours. One thing leads to another, and there's LOTS to explore. Great site suggestions offered, based on individual interests, and plenty of interesting things await me, I'm sure. One thing I stumbled upon was photos of sidewalk art done by a man who draws absolutely incredible perspective pieces.
I thought I'd do my blog on one of the food sites, and I was planning to breeze through the awards list top to bottom, until I came to the food section. But I haven't gotten anywhere near that far down the list yet. I will, because Sally A. was at one, and she had a good experience; I want to check out some of the recipes (good food being one of my joys) and try some of them--yummy!
There's so much more to explore. I don't have enough time to see all the good stuff that's offered on the Net, but I do enjoy examining the wealth of information that's posted there.
